The student nation
Norrlands nation had a small unorganized male choir at the
beginning, in 1827, but the choir became a more formalized part of the Nation
in 1853. Some great years for the choir were 1882-1912 when a number of tours were made to Norrland, the northern home provinces, to help funding the construction of the Nation's magnificent old building. This period also coincides with the years when male choirs were most popular by the general swedish public. In the 1930's the choir also had a inclining period with several skilful conductors. After the radical 1960's male choirs were by many considered as "old fashioned" and in the middle of the 1970's the choir had molten down to a quartet. In the 1980's the declination had ended and several new male quartets started within the Nation and gradually they all began singing together with the "official quartet" at several of the Nation's traditional festivities. The 1990's though, is the great expansion period for the choir which now has an established organization again and counts around 25 members. The main repertoire consists of the old traditional male choir songs of the 19th century: (that tradition was founded among the students in Uppsala around 1810) patriotic marches, drinking songs, and serenades for the ladies. (and Bellman of course) Chorus Virorum sings mostly at various occasions at the Nation, the traditional formal dinners and other events. We sing outside the Nation as soon as we have an opportunity, often at celebrations of different kinds. All the male choirs of the student nations in Uppsala have, since 1995, a great manifestation in May, the "Kapris-festival", where each choir sings one or two songs of their own, and at the beginning and at the end all the choirs sing together about 8 numbers in the mighty "Kapris Choir". |
